- Windows Defender: This program prevents, removes, and quarantines spyware in Microsoft Windows. It comes standard with Windows Vista and Windows 7 and is available as a free download for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003.
- Malwarebytes: Scans for and removes malware when started manually. You can download the free software at www.malwarebytes.org. Malwarebyte’s paid version provides scheduled scans, real-time protection, and a flash memory scanner.
- HijackThis: Targets browser-hijacking methods, rather than relying on a database of known spyware. This program allows you to pick and choose the items you want removed from your computer. However, this tool does not determine which files are spyware. It is more of a reporting tool to help you spot the spyware. Download this program for free here.
- Spybot Search & Destroy: This program scans the computer hard disk and/or RAM for malicious software and does a great job of spyware removal. It is available as a free download at www.safer-networking.org.
